hide category menu item if no posts of this category

hi,
i set up a block theme with a navigation block that contains links to pages as well as links to category archive. one category archive menu item should disappear from the navigation menu if there are no posts with the defined category.
i am sure there is a script for the function.php that can filter out an empty category archive from the menu, but i can’t figure it out. anybody?
