hide cart and checkout menu items if empty

Before i spend my time trying to work it out, I wondered if anyone has already figured out how to hide the cart and checkout menu items if the cart is empty.

I see a few plug ins that provide dynamic menus usually based on roles, but i haven’t seen any with a broader range of conditions.
