Hide All Subcategories from Product Categories List Widget

How do I only display the parent categories using the ‘Product Categories List’ widget. I don’t want to show subcategories here, just the parents.
I have tried every possible configuration in the Product Category Editor and nothing stops the subcategories from displaying. I have trawled the internet looking for a solution, tried lots of useless PHP and CSS snippets from Stack overflow and other equally misleading forums, but nothing allows me to display only the parent categories. Am I missing something really obvious here?
Surely this most simple of requirements cannot be hard to resolve and a simple solution must exist?

This can be fixed with some custom CSS. Under Customize > Additional CSS, you can add the following code:
