hidden redirect file?

    My client has one blog post permalink that returns a 404 error. No matter how many times I’ve saved the permalink settings, updated the post, etc. I still get a 404 when I visit the post itself (from the actual link in the posts area in the dashboard). It seems that perhaps somehow a permalink was changed at one point in time and a redirect was created, but I don’t know where else other than .htaccess WordPress would store those redirects. I’ve noticed similar automatic redirects before, but never had to search for or remove them. Now I need to know how to correct this, as the post link that was previously shared and pinned is returning a 404.

    hope you are having great weekend so far!

    So you don’t get any 404 errors for new posts?
    Did you try editing the permalink from the backedn post editor – just to see if would give a 404?

    Do you have any custom redirects in your .htaccess file?
    If so, please upload it on https://pastebin.com or some other file sharing site.
    If it is longer than 3-4 lines, please do not post it here, as it is going to be deleted, because of the forum rules.

    Other reason that come to mind is some kind of plugin.
    For example a plugin for geo redirection, security plugin, caching plugin, and any other plugin that can be related to redirections.

    Thanks for your help, Ivan. There were no plugins involved. And the .htaccess file was clean. I finally discovered that it was a combination of both a post and a page my client had in the trash that had the same permalink. Plus a media attachment with the same permalink.

    She’s having a similar issue on dozens of posts where the post shows in search results, but you click on it and it takes you to the media attachment page. Editing the media attachment slug fixes the issue.

    Not sure how the import was done originally that caused this issue, but it’s a real headache. Thankful to have it halfway fixed.
