Hidden fees and misleading upgrades
-
Unfortunately, my experience with this plugin started off poorly due to hidden fees and misleading upgrade practices after switching from Yoast, a decision I now regret.
If you use WooCommerce, they heavily push the paid version, claiming the SEO score won’t display correctly otherwise. I decided to upgrade, but there’s a major catch: with the paid upgrade, you’re automatically subscribed to a content creator plan. It’s presented as a free 15-day trial during the checkout process, but there’s no way to opt out—all upgrade plans include it.
The cancellation process was frustrating, as the instructions in their knowledge base were inaccurate. I only managed to cancel after finding a helpful review in this forum. All this might be buried somewhere in their extensive 19-page terms and conditions, but I wasn’t willing to sift through it when I bought the upgrade.
In the end, I canceled both subscriptions. Now I have 50 weeks to switch to SEOPress (my original Yoast alternative), which is based in France, where such hidden fees are prohibited. While Yoast isn’t perfect, at least they’re transparent about their pricing, unlike RankMath.
UPDATE: They reimbursed me the same day I wrote this for the unwanted AI addon, even after the 15 days cancellation period. Thanks!
