I’ve googled the snot out of this question only to come up blank. In the site dashboard > settings > general, you can setup all the general information about your site including title and tagline.

The question is…. Is there a way I can have < and > show up in the ‘tagline’ portion of the site? Example: Frome the <Ashes> of disaster. The greater than and less than symbols are an inside community thing so yes, I can leave them out but I would really like to find a way to display it. As it is now, wordpress just rips them out and anything in between. Maybe it thinks I’m trying to put markup in the tagline but it’s not meant that way.

Try using character entities. I can’t actually write you out an example because the forum software will render the symbols, but scroll down to “less than” and “greater than” on this page and use the corresponding “HTML name”.

PERFECT!! Thank you very much. It worked.

From the <Ashes&#62 of the calamity!

You’re genius. I’ve tried so many other mark up type things and they all failed but this one.

Well, I typed it wrong in my last comment but you get the idea.
