We don’t completely understand your message. If you are having unexpected costs using our plugin, please drop us a note on [email protected], so that we can further look into your problem.

I tested EWWW and WP Smush and TinyPNG (yes, with an API key that allows 500 free per month) reduced the file size of my test image (1600×1067 photograph exported from Aperture at 823 KB) by more than half the original file size. The other 2 reduced minimally (about 10-20%).

This was not a question, just a post to let users know, that your service could become a very expensive experience, when there is some free options out there, maybe not as good, but much better option then a huge unexpected bill.

I personally could not afford to use your service, and would not even attempt to try to use the so call free 500 conversions per month, from what I can gather people often end up with huge bills, whilst believing they have not gone over the 500 free monthly conversion.

If you do want answer something, please answer, what measures do you have in place to prevent someone from being charged after the 500 free monthly conversions are reached?

So you know, I would be happy to use your service, if i had to buy tokens to use the service, this would give me control of what I can spend and not run an unexpected bill, like others appear to be doing regularly.

After signing up you are limited to 500 free compressions. This is the default. Only if you enter your payment information and you compress more than 500 images will you be billed.

After you have already provided your credit card information, you can revert to a free account with 500 compressions via your account page, accessible through https://tinypng.com/developers.

When you upload an image to your website, WordPress will create different sized versions of it (see Settings > Media). The plugin will compress each of these sizes, so when you have 100 images and 5 different sizes you will do 500 compressions.

We also list the number of compressions made this month in WordPress (see Settings > Media) as well as on the account page accessible through https://tinypng.com/developers.

We try to be quite transparent about our pricing!

We definitely think 500 compressions works for many users that have modest needs of a small scale website. But we do appreciate your feedback! We will think about ways for users to anticipate what the costs are going to be if they decide to upgrade to a paid account.

@delta Just checked EWWW’s website. For 900 image conversions, TinyPNG is cheaper, by about 90 cents.
I’ll be taking a look at this plugin, TinyPNG, to make my website load even faster.

    YMMV
