My categories have all disappeared from my blog.

It’s very strange, because when you look at the dashboard, it says there are xx categories, when I go on the web page itself, posts and menus that are based on categories are still there…but when I go to the Categories tab in the back end, I can’t see the categories. It still says there are xx categories, but I can’t see them and can’t choose a category when I create a new post…not even the default “uncategorized”.

In the backend all posts also show as “ungategorized” but when I watch them on the homepage they are categorized.

    Please, someone help.

    Sincerely
    Jacob

  • What happened just before this problem began?

That is the strange thing…I didn’t do anything (as far as I know).

I logged in to write a new post on my site. As I logged in (using the plugin “Sidebar login”) I noticed that that plugin referred to a //localhost-file instead of the file it was supposed to refer to. Specifically it was when I clocked the “dashboard” link in the plugin that it tried to take me to a localhost-file version of the dashboard instead of the dashboard on the site. So I changed those links, went on to write my posts…and afterwards discovered my problem.

And now, another problem has arisen…all my menus have disappeared to. I can see them when I choose which menus should be visible from the drop down menu…but the tabs with all my menus have disappeared.

Is this a database problem? Is everything slowly falling out of the hole in the Internet?

    1. Backup everything immediately. Always advised when things get weird.
    2. Scan the site: https://sitecheck.sucuri.net/scanner/
    3. What is your URL?
    4. Have you checked your database tables for corruption?

ad1. Everything is backed up, so I should be ok
    ad2. Will try that
    ad3. the site is https://tumbling.nu
ad4. I have no idea how to check database tables for corruption…that’s how smart I am

Oops, sorry. I completely forgot to thank you for your advice ??

To check your tables you will need access to something like phpmyadmin? does that sound familiar at all?

It is vaguely familiar, but I haven’t tried working with it. I’ll look into it though. Thanks a lot ??

Problem solved. It is my host that has been messing things up…it seems it’s something they do every once in a while.

Thanks for all your help though…I learned about phpmyadmin ??
