Help…Accidently Deleted My Blog

If you’ve deleted ONLY the WP files via FTP – all your content (posts, Pages, comments, settings) are still in the database – provided you didn’t do anything in phpMyadmin.

If you can remember which version of WP it was, you can just upload the files again to the same location.
Next step: you will have to find out the DB name and other details for the wp-config file.
Do you have phpMyadmin access?

Thanks Moshu (great hearing from you again, I hope you’re doing well.), It’s the most recent version of WP, I installed it on a different server a couple of months ago. I went to MySLQ and pasted the user name/pass in the config & uploaded it. (BTW, according to the MySQL the user and db name are the same. Seems odd but since that’s what it says I guess it must me right. Is that correct?)

I’m getting an error message “Error establishing a database connection
This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
Are you sure that the database server is running?”

I’m puzzled by this, any ideas?

Then maybe you are among the 1% where “localhost” is not true for the DB host. Could you check with your host? Or maybe in the site admin panel/interface there is something that would give you a hint…

Alternatively, ask your host to restore your site from their most recent back up (check that it *is* recent). Most hosts do weekly backups, so unless you’ve got a crappy host, or you’ve made loads of changes recently, you should be fine with that approach.

vavroom, but if the OP deleted only the files viA FTP – hopefully the DB is still there intact, he just can’t remember what was in the wp-config.

Yes, of course, if the DB is still there, it’s fine. The problem sometimes, however, with just just putting the files back in is that you may be missing plugin files, you have to make sure you have all your plugins back where they belong, etc. And theme files.

I know *I* would never get away with just “plopping” the WP files back in my directory and editing wp-config. But then I take my own backups on a regular basis ??

Thanks guys. First, remember that the blog was active before, so the local host issue, isn’t an issue.

Let me bring this up again. If I go into MySQL and I see the db name and the user name listed there, wouldn’t those be the correct names? (I do think it’s odd and not typical of me that they would be the same.) Could the db and user name be anything different from what’s listed?

Also, I’m confused by asking my host for a backup. Aside from the fact that I believe the files are on the server, how would a backup resolve my incorrect db/user name?

I do have plugins I use but they are all in a “Setup WP” config I use for every blog. I just create a new db/user name and change the config & upload.

That’s where it stands. What do you think?
