• Hi people-

I’m very nervous about the problem I’m having because I had the same problem last week, misunderstood (or searched incorrectly for) a solution and changed something that made my site disappear and wasn’t able to recover it – even with help.

The main problem is I’m not technical enough to be doing some of this stuff ??

So issue one: I’ve built my homepage at https://www.mysite.com/home in WordPress because it won’t let me leave the extension blank. I want to make sure when people type https://www.mysite.com into their browser they can get to my homepage (of course). Can someone tell me what and where to change? I’m under the impression that it’s the SITE ADDRESS in General/settings, but I also think this is what I did last week when I nuked my site.

Issue two: In pages/edit, my page https://www.mysite.com/about will not let me rename it to /about it keeps changing it to /about-2 even though I don’t have another page with that name. Any ideas?

Sorry for your patience with my noobness and thanks for your help.

    Matthew

  • Instead of a blank “extension” just add a forward slash, like “/”.

Regarding the about page, you most likely have a page in your trash with the /about slug. Empty your trash cans and then rename the new about page’s slug to “/about”.

    Hi acchiappaprezzo-

Thanks so much for your reply – help is ALWAYS appreciated.

Your solution for /about-2 worked great. There was indeed a default About page I had moved to the trash and totally forgotten about.

However the slash trick didn’t work. There is one in there by default, at least in the Edit panel. When I try to change the extension, all that is editable is the home characters in a light yellow box. The https://www.mysite.com/ remains display text and is not editable. Furthermore, once I type in my “home” and hit the OK box, another slash is added to the end of the URL.

Any other ideas would be welcome, thanks!
