• I created a site in Simone since its creator is a reputable wp professional. However I cannot find from the theme support page whether it is compatible with 5.1. It has not been updated since 2017. I am not a developer so testing my site in a sandbox environment is very difficult for me. I chose WP because it seemed reliable and now I find my site is vulnerable. There must be thousands of small businesses in this situation. 1. How do I find out if Simone theme is ok with 5.1 or not?
    Thanks

  • There shouldn’t be very much in a theme that makes it incompatible from one WP version to the next.
It doesn’t hurt your site to use the Customizer to preview the theme, if you are already on 5.1. If you’re not on 5.1, then ask yourself if your WP version is more important than your theme. When you upgrade, you can see if there are any problems (unlikely), and if there are, switch themes or report the problems to get them fixed.

WordPress mostly tries to maintain backward compatibility. The biggest break with that tradition was with 5.0 and the new editor. That threw a lot of things out the window…

    Hi Joy,
Thanks for taking the time to reply. I haven’t upgraded to 5.0 yet, since I can’t risk my site being broken just now. I am looking into changing to a different theme but it’s a nuisance for small businesses to have to spend time doing that rather than doing business. I do think it’s irresponsible for WP trainers to recommend their themes and then not provide up to date info about them. I understand they may not want to update them but they should make that clear from the outset. Many wp users don’t want to be developers, I thought that was the point of it. The WP version is more important for security but it’s not problem free to change themes. Will I use WP for a new site, probably not.
