• I truly apologize for having to ask. I do hope someone has patience with me.

I have created a sub-domain, named it inspirations and activated the Adventure theme. I set it up to be 2 columns to the one static page & the one posting page.

You can see the static/front page at https://inspirations.motdaugrnds.com

You can see page for posts at https://inspirations.motdaugrnds.com/category/let-us-talk/

I want it to be a simple blogging site consisting of only one static/front page (without posting permitted on this page) but with a link to the posting page; and I only want one post page (permitting the public to post on this page) with a link to my primary domain, i.e. https://motdaugrnds.com/inspirational

This is what I have done so far:

I created my “static/front page” with two columns. On the left are simple comments. On the right is the link to my “posting page” I moved the header down to the bottom because I could not get the black to change to a less intimidating color. The “menu” is showing in that black header with two hyperlinks. One is a link to my youtube channel and the other is a link that takes viewer back to this same static/front page. (I’ld like to remove the link that goes nowhere except to take viewer back to same page.)

I created my “post” page (It showed up with 2 columns as well.) It has the same 2 hyperlinks in the black banner as is on my static/front page; and it has the very same link in the right column that goes nowhere…just takes reader back to this same posting page. Also I cannot find a way to let people post to this page.

Can anyone direct me as to how to get the link to my primary domain on both the static/front page as well as on the posting page?

Can anyone direct me as to how to take off the links (on both pages) that go nowhere except to return the viewer to the same page they were viewing when they clicked it?

I’ve pretty much given up on getting this sub-domain to look any better; but I would like links that do not make me look foolish.

  • Hi motdaugrnds,

I’ll try to help you if I can.

The links that take you back to the same page are designed that way so
that you can navigate to those pages from any page. The sidebar isn’t supposed to change when you change pages.

Same with the black banner. It has the main navigation for the site and will be present on every page.

    — Part I —

To be able to link to your inspiration site you can add the link to the sidebar.

From the Dashboard click on ‘Appearance’ then ‘Widgets’. Under the list of available widgets find the ‘Text’ widget. Drag it over to the ‘sidebar’ box and drop it in.

The Text widget will open up a window. You can put a title or leave it
blank. In the text area type this link: <a href = "https://motdaugrnds.com/motdaugrnds/inspirational/">My Inspirational Home</a>

You can change the ‘My Inspirational Home’ to anything you want. Click
    the ‘Save’ button.

This link should now be in the sidebar.

    — Part II —

You’d like people to be able to post to the page. To allow people to
leave comments check that you have the right settings.

    1. In admin click on ‘All Posts’ then click on your “Hello Everyone”
post. This will open the post editor. At the top of the window click on ‘Screen Options’. If Discussion and Comments aren’t ticked, do that. This turns on comments. Click the ‘Update’ button on the top right.

    2. On the left of the admin window find ‘Settings’ and click ‘Discussion’.

In the Discussions Settings window choose if you want people to enter
a name and email before commenting or be registered etc.

    Good luck!

DivbyXRo, I did exactly as you suggested; and you can go look for yourself to see what occurred.

There is still no way for the public to discuss/comment and the “text widget” only put part of that coding on the sidebar.

    Now what?

I returned and edited the coding you said to place there, replacing it with a typical html coding for such a hyperlink, i.e. with the

<a href= parenthesis and the regular URL to my primary domain followed by the target_blank thingy and the typical ending of such a hyperlink. It gave me this on that sidebaar:

    My Inspirational Home

Yeah, this worked! Thank you so much for letting me know about that “text widget”.

In re-reading your post, I find you changed the coding you had suggested; so guess we’re both still learning, which is just fine. ??

Now to find out why there is still no way for the public to make comments or have discussions…as that part of what you told me to do didn’t work either.

Hi there – it looks like your theme doesn’t display the comment form on the category archive template – that’s what’s used here:

    https://inspirations.motdaugrnds.com/category/let-us-talk/

To comment on a post, people need to click on the individual posts – i.e. here:

This theme also seems to change at times, i.e. today the youtube hyperlink now showing in the header at the bottom was not showing up. (The “inspirations” link was way over to the left side in that header.) That is why I placed the youtube hyperlink in on the sidebar via a text widget. Now, however, I see the youtube link is showing up in he header at the bottom of the page; so I wind up with 2 links to the same spot. (Seems this theme is determined to make me look like an idiot.

Even when I use your new link that nicely shows a place for the public to post, the link on the sidebar that returns one back to this same page turns up a page where there is no place to post.

WPyogi, how do I get that comment on a posting page like you did?

WPyogi, how do I get that comment on a posting page like you did?

I clicked to the post’s own page – comments don’t display on the category template in that theme. Changing that will be quite involved and require coding, so I’m not sure that’s for you :). You’d need to ask on the theme’s own forum in any case –
