Help with changing index page

Hi I’m having a bit of trouble with a few things and need responses asap.

First off, I want to say I’m using the theme twentyten and need to adjust it a bit. First off, all my posts are being displayed in their entirety on the index page of the site. I want the homepage to be something static, an intro to the site not the blog page. Is there any way I can do this?

Second, I want to add a column for widgets on the left of the theme as well (have content in middle with 1 column on either side). Is there any way I can do this without knowledge of php? I know quite a bit of HTML and CSS and some javascript, but not much else. Help please and thank you.
