• I have a question about commenting. I haven’t had that much to talk about so I don’t log into my account that much. The problem is that when I do log in, sometimes I can wind up with over 100 spam comments. I have only gotten one lagitamate comment on the site since it was moved from wordpress.com not quite a year ago. Is there a way I can increase the number of real comments while decreasing the number of spammers? I’ve tried closing comments on at least one post, but it only does good for so long, then they try to attack other posts, and as long as I’m able to maintain the website, I want people to be able to comment. I do have Akismet so I think less than 5 of the over 400 spam comments have reached my blog, but I don’t like spending hours wading through the comments only to delete them all. Again, any help is appreciated in this manner. Might I also suggest that wp add a notification of any type of comment to the system, so even if a comment is placed into your spam queue you are notified via email and it will get taken care of faster. If you would like to take a look at my site for any assistance you may have to provide me, it is listed in my profile, and I’ll give you the link if you don’t want to go to my profile. https://bobcavanaugh.pcriot.com

  • Hi Bob,

You could require that people be registered before they can leave a comment. In the dashboard Settings > Discussion > Other comment settings. This would at least slow people down and may discourage the lazy spammers at least.

You may also want to implement the WP-reCAPTCHA plugin:

    Hope these suggestions help.

Hmm. These are good suggestions that I’ll think about. However, I am not a big fan of those sites where you have to register to comment because I may only use it once. This also doesn’t solve the problem that I am not getting a single real comment and it seems that this step would only make it worse. I am also not a huge fan of captcha plugins, I really don’t want my users to have to fill out one of those to comment.

Oops, could a mod please delete that last post? I doesn’t look like we can delete posts and after looking at the ip blocker, it looks like it won’t do any good as all it does is hold the comments in the queue which it is already doing.
