    Hi!

I am a newbie using WP 5.1 w/ the Twenty Nineteen theme.

My goal is to create a SIMPLE blog (a subdomain to my existing website, which is not a WP site) that is linked from the site’s Main Menu, which appears on every page of the site. I already installed WP and the blog is up and running. So far, there is only one blog page (the theme’s default page).

My blog will display four types of posts: Art Topics, My Artworks, the Artworks of Great Artists, and the Artworks of Contemporary Artists.

I can either create five pages: a static Home Page, four Post Pages (one for each type of post), and and About Page.

Or, I can create two pages: a Home Page for all posts and an About Page. And, use categories to segregate the posts in the Home Page.

However, I don’t know how categories work. If I categorize the posts in the Home Page, will ALL the posts be displayed in reverse chronological order and, then, when a viewer clicks on a category, ONLY the posts in the category would be displayed in the Home Page?

    Thank you!

    Dr. T

I’d use the categories to divide my posts and place category links in my menu with the front page set to display all your blog posts. The About page would, of course, be a page instead of a post and would have its own menu link. You’ll want a blog link there too and a home link back to your main site.

That will pretty much set you up for what you want and help you segment the subjects into further parts while maintaining a list of every post there.

You can also further divide categories as needed by adding a subcategory as a child of a category… And you can have posts in several categories as appropriate just by checking the buttons for the other categories at post creation time or a subsequent edit.

    Dear JNashHawkins,

    Thank you for your reply!

If I understood you, first, I would create a menu w/ six elements: the four categories, a link to the About Page, and a link to my website.

    >>> I didn’t understand what you meant by “a blog link.” <<<

Initially, the Front Page would display all posts (which must include a category). Right?

If a viewer clicks on a category, then the Front Page would ONLY display the category’s posts. Right?

How does the viewer go back to the Front Page that displays all posts?

    Hey Dr. T,

Hi. you can set the front page setting to your latest posts. which can be done by going to customise>> then homepage setting.
    then select ‘your latest post’

by doing so your home will show all the post of all categories.

If you want you can have different page for all the categories or you can have a widget where all the categories will be listed and by clicking on them user can go to the related post you can check something like that here…
