Help ustomizing Templete (Twentyten)

    Hi:

    I am using the default twentyten template. I was wondering if it was (easily) possible to modify this main page.

    Rather than posting each whole post on the main page, is it possible to just post the first, oh, say 100 words, with a link to “read more here” or something like that?

    I did try editing “The Loop” and changing out “The_Content” out for “The_Excerpt”, and this worked fine except I want an image in there, too. If I can add an image to an EXCERPT, I guess I can make that work, but it would be easier if there was a way to make the main page just have the image plus the first 100 or so words.

    First, you’ll want to use either a Child Theme or duplicate your current twentyten theme and give it a new location/name otherwise any changes will be overwritten on upgrade.

    The easiest solution is probably using the_excerpt in association with a plugin that will pull the first image in the post, I know I’ve seen something like that out there somewhere.

    Thanks for the help- I am new at this. I discovered the over-write problem from 3.0.4 to 3.0.5, so I back up now!!!

    I have played a bit more with the_excerpt option, and I have gotten that to work. I can add the image to the main post, then look at the HTML code, copy that to Excerpt, and post it- that is working, But a bit rough…

    I will look in the plug ins, but if you come across it, let me know. I am trying to automate as much as I can!

    The best way to do this (now that i’ve given the easy way) if it is site-wide is to create a filter for get_the_excerpt which is much more advanced, but gives you much more control. You can find various resources on using this through Dr. Google, unfortunately get_the_excerpt filters aren’t really documented to in-depth in the codex.
