Think I May Have Caused a 404 Error

  • Late last night while logged in to my WP admin dash, I did something I should not have, I think. Too tired and didn’t think it thru. While I did not change anything else, I inadvertently changed the WP Site Title from Happy Horse of America to Everything Equines (I’m setting up a 2nd site).

    Now, when I try to login to my WP dash, I get the 404 message. That said, the folder and sql database are right where they are supposed to be and my new Avada theme is uploaded to my host. I’m not sure if making that simple title change screwed it up or if it’s something else. Either way, I’ve got to fix the problem.

    I just tried to log into this and now got this error message: PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function get_header() in E:\USERS\HappyHour1\www\HHOA-WP-SITE\index.php on line 1 instead of the 404 message as it occurred when I used my normal login address of https://www.happyhour1.com/hhoa-wp-site/wp-admin

    I’m hoping it’s a simple, quick fix. I won’t even go into why I made this mistake — just too tired and should not have been even working on the computer – LOL…

    Any suggestions would be much appreciate.

    OK. I think I followed instructions and it didn’t work. Possibly, I’ve made a mistake.

    The file functions.php exists in the Avada file. I tried to make the changes and upload them via FTP and it didn’t work.

    I then went into my host’s control panel, found the functions.php file to see if the changes were reflected (they were not), so I added the code directly into the host function.php file… I think it was the correct information:

    Saved the file; tried to load up several times on Google Chrome and IE – still get that 404 error code. Cleared out history/cache.

    I have not deleted out this additoinal code since I’ve been unable to access the site. I understand this code is to be deleted once the site is back.

    Hopefully, you will see that I’m a newbie to WP and have not quite got this right yet…

    Still not resolved. I corrected the codex links because I saw that I did not include the ? mark before the closing bracket ?>. I uploaded the corrected functions.php file via FTP a short while ago, and followed the instructions which indicated it might take a few tries to get to the admin login. No luck. Cleared cache in multiple browsers — tried the login in all of them several times.

    While this should not have a thing to do with it, I have a separate sql database and file folder for what will be my 2nd site, everythingequestrians. I don’t see why this would affect my edits and files that are placed in my HHOA-WP-SITE folder/files, which is where I edited the functions.php file.

    Any other suggestions. I’m trying so hard to get to work on this site in an effort to supplement my disability income. I fully realize there is a learning curve, and probably more with WP initially. However, I need to retain control and ownership over my website files. Once I get through this first one, our other sites should be easier to set up. At least, that’s what I’m hoping…
