Help Selecting Buddypress template

Full disclosure I’m completely new to WordPress, I have read and studied considerably over the last year. I’ve had two practice sites now and have some experience setting up simple sites.

I’m wanting to set up a community based around a niche type of cycling. I want all the features of social media that Buddypress offers. I also want forums, user blogs, user photo gallerys.

I also want to set up some static pages and a web based store.

I’m getting lost in the sea of themes to choose from, I’m having a hard time differentiating how to compare different features of the themes.

I’m really wanting a theme that has ‘room to grow’ and I also don’t want to be tied into preset color themes…

Ofcourse I have no clue how to use code so as of now I’m limited to using themes just how they come.

I’ve been looking at Woo Themes Canvas with their add-on Buddypress child theme. Would that be a wise decision? The BuddyDress themes are nice looking but Canvas seems more powerful is that correct?
