Help organizing archive pages/listing posts by year and category

Okay, here’s what I am trying to accomplish…This particular site has several pages that need to call up posts from a particular category (e.g., News, Letters, etc.). So when the visitor browses to the “News” page, they see a table listing all of the posts from the “News” category from 2012. At the top of the table they need to be able to select from 2011 posts, 2010 posts, 2009 posts, etc. etc… and clicking on one of those will bring up the list of “News” posts from that particular year.

I’ve gotten as far as figuring how to call up the list and organize it the way I want in table format. But I have two issues…(1) the list right now is only showing the most recent 5 posts and (2) I can’t figure out how to split it up by year in the way I’ve described above.
