• Sorry for the confusing post, I literally have no idea what to do next.

I have an existing wordpress.com blog. I want to move this to www.remarpro.com, so I can install plugins and do all the extra stuff. However, I don’t have a webhost yet. I’m still in the building stage. It’ll take me around 4-5 months to build everything to the point where I’m happy for it to be released to live.

So….to avoid paying for a host earlier than needed, I thought doing a local install would be best. I tried WAMP, but it didn’t work at all – my localhost/myphpadmin just opened a blank page. All the help topics seemed to suggest changing a HOSTS file, or the port WAMP uses which was just insanely confusing.

I tried AMPPS and it was just hugely complicated. I had to change a port from 80 to 81 because something unknown was using 80, but then the WordPress installation never completed, the page just kept loading. I don’t think it could find my test_db database.

So, I’ve given up with offline.

Basically, all I want to do is move from blog from wordpress.com to www.remarpro.com, and carry on creating and writing pages and blog posts as I do on wordpress.com now, and be able to test what it looks like and how it functionally works, without having to sign up to a hosting company yet.

    How can I do this?

Hello. There are alternatives to WAMP specifically for WordPress that might be a little easier to configure. One of those is ServerPress.

Another suggestion is to find a really cheap hosting plan, one you don’t necessarily care about, and use that temporarily.

By the way, I just looked and GoDaddy has a sale for $1/month hosting. You have Google ‘godaddy free hosting for 6 months’ and an ad comes up. (it won’t come up searching just for ‘GoDaddy’). You can easily upgrade if needed later or just change hosts.

Don’t give up! There are many pleasures awaiting you in the world of local web development!
ServerPress, as Tia mentioned, is an easy option (with a free, or low cost plan). I prefer MAMP PRO.
But, first, read through this CODEX document on Moving WordPress. Much valuable information there.

    Good luck!

Thanks, I’ll look into ServerPress. I’m reasonably computer savvy to be honest, but the WAMP installation was a bit horrible, and it gave me absolutely no clues as to why the myphpadmin page was blank.

Hopefully ServerPress will be a bit more helpful, and if it can detect that a particular port is being used and change it automatically, that’d be even better.

Perhaps you two could assist me further though:
The only reason why I’m thinking about a move away from wordpress.com is because I want to do 2 things:
    1. Amend the CSS to do one or two changes.
    2. The structure of my site has no blog posts at all, but it has 3000 pages. The reason I went with pages is because the particular theme I have provides a “breadcrumb” navigation menu, and it works 100% better if the end result is a page, not a blog post. Also, the content on each page is static, doesn’t need categories or tags and people will want to find historical pages rather than just the latest content. Creating 3000 pages (and also configuring the Menu) on wordpress.com takes FOREVER, and I’m worried about hitting a limit. I heard there were bulk creation plugins that I could potentially use which is why I wanted to switch to www.remarpro.com.

If anyone can offer advice for help using wordpress.com, then perhaps I don’t need to switch?

Looking at this link about ServerPress – https://serverpress.com/get-desktopserver/ – will I be able to import my existing wordpress.com site into this? I’m not sure if import is a premium feature?

According to this – https://docs.serverpress.com/article/37-cpanel-import-live-website – it costs $99 to import an existing site.

Do you have any other recommendations for the easiest way to install wordpress locally?

    Thanks

    Hi,

Do you have any idea about xampp??
    Its very easy to install.

No, I haven’t tried that. Is it a different installation process to WAMP or AMPPS?

XAMPP worked perfectly, thank you very much!
