• I messed up a previous post when I tried to edit in a link to my site. Any attempt to access my web site is extremely slow, if it even loads. I am a novice at this and could use some suggestions that a beginner can comprehend. My site was very quick to load until recently and I had not changed anything that I know of that would have caused the slow down. I have run kingdom. com tests and though I do not completely understand the results, there are some problem areas. Right off the bat there was a 16 second wait before anything happened. I would appreciate assistance in finding out how to fix this. My site is

For some reason I am not getting the link to my site to show up.
    It is hopsonarts.com

Not sure if it’s relevant but error console shows this error:
Error: Image corrupt or truncated: https://hopsonarts.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Clown1.jpg
I think that relates to images with changed extensions, so you may want to google it up and see if it gives any clues.

Thank you webbrewers. I removed that image and it did not help. I have also tried a different theme without positive results.

That was just an example..all the images in the slideshow had the same error.
Also try deactivating all plug ins with a default theme active and see how it works.

Long delays before the site even loads are usually something related to your hosting account, but that’s never a guarantee. If it’s not a hosting problem, it could be a variety of other things as well (e.g. if you have a huge site with lots of posts, that will slow down the site too).

If you can get into the site admin, you might try installing a caching plugin like W3 Total Cache. That said, you might need some help getting that done because the settings aren’t really intended for beginner use.

If you were able to get that set up and noticed a speed difference, then it would be something you could leave enabled so long as you know what to expect when you have a caching plugin installed.

Otherwise, you’d need to talk with a WordPress pro.

I have now tried deactivating all plug ins and removed the page that contained the slideshow. This may have helped a tiny bit, but did not resolve the problem.

I also ran the pingdom.com tests and that showed the following results on the first line of 29 total requests:

    File Path: http//:www.hopsonarts.com
    DNS-302 ms
    Connect-466 ms
    Send-0 ms
    Wait-16.11s (Seconds)
    Receive-0 ms
    Total-16.88 Seconds

The second line was for File Path http//:hopsonarts.com and the results were:

    DNS-0 ms
    Connect-163 ms
    Send-0 ms
    Wait-12.07 ms
    Receive-1.02 s
    Total-13.26 Seconds

    The overall results were:
    Requests-29
    Load Time-31.1 Seconds (28.18 s were wait)
    Page Size- 403.0 KB

Something is choking the processing of your WordPress pages. It might be database related. Basically those results suggest that you’re able to connect to the host but then it takes forever to process the page.

If you have deactivated all plugins and it’s still doing that, then it’s not related to the slideshow (unless your slideshow is part of your theme and not a plugin).

You can try switching themes if you want to rule out the theme, but usually when we see long delays like that, it has something to do with a query for a lot of data OR a query for a small amount of data in a gigantic database.

Any idea how large your WordPress database is? In MB or GB (not posts and pages)?

No idea how large the database is. I will look into accessing it to find out.

vrazer, I was able to access the database but am unsure of what I am looking for. Do I need to enable database statistics to determine the database size?

Under the Structure tab was the following table. Not sure if this is what I am trying to find.

I am getting error when trying to access your website, hopsonarts.com

    “Error establishing a database connection”

    Thread Starter BenHopson

    (@benhopson)

I am also getting the error. This started after I accessed the database and I have no idea what is causing the error. It was the first time I accessed the database and I did reset the password as part of “set up”, so that I could get to the database. Any thoughts as to what has gone wrong would be much appreciated.

    @benhopson,

Changing the database password is going to take down the site. You’ll need to copy the new password you created into your wp-config.php file in order to allow WordPress to connect to your database again.

As for the info you sent over, it looks like your site is relatively small so there is no reason it should be going slow. You really should consider a caching plugin like what I mentioned above. If you’re never used one of those before, though, be careful. If you use the wrong options it can cause your site to go down or experience other problems too. Unfortunately that is usually true with the most valuable caching options (page caching). Caching plugins are a pretty popular route for speeding up a site, though.

Another possibility is your web host. Have you tried Googling for reviews of the host? If you’re using a web host that is known for slow performance, switching to one that is known for faster performance might be an option. If you haven’t tried talking with your web hosts’s support team, though, you should really do that. They may be able to offer some more specific recommendations.

If you changed the password for the database, you have to go into the wp-config.php file and update the password there under db_password.
