I have an old website that was created a long time ago by a web developer. This website is old and the content is out of date. Recently I have decided to take control of it and try to redesign the webpage but I have no prior knowledge of web design at all and figured I could start with using wordpress.

I have recently transferred my domain from my local registrar to hostgator. After installing wordpress from quickinstall I encountered the following 404 error message.

The requested URL /wp-admin was not found on this server.
apache/2.2.22 (ubuntu) server at localhost port 80

I have been stuck in this phase for awhile now not knowing the solution to the problem.
I do not know how relevant is this information but i do not wish to keep any of the content. I only wish to retain the domain name and start designing from scratch again to give it a fresh new look.

I would really appreciate any help i can get.

  • Hello njuin!

I am sorry to hear you have this issue, I would like to help resolve it ??

First, a little bit of additional info and clarification would be great. Did you move the database and/or files of your old website to Hostgator?
When changing Domain DNS settings, it can take up to 48 hours for them to propagate and take effect, so depending on how long ago you did the domain change, it is possible you are arriving on the old server.

And lastly, could you please check what do you get when you are trying to open the frontend of your WordPress website? I mean, the same address what gives you the 404 error, but without /wp-admin.

    Thank you! ??

    Cheers,

    Hi Balint,

Thank you so much for your help!

Previously I was stuck in this problem for more than a month. I spoke with hostgator support recently and they suggest that it could still be pointing at the old server. So I initiated the domain transfer 2 weeks ago but when the transfer was complete I still had the same problem (despite waiting for 48 hours).

However this morning when i tried it again. It worked! I can’t begin to describe my excitement after having been stuck for so long. Even though the problem is resolved I can’t thank you enough for wanting to help. I really appreciate it.

Thank you very much Balint. ??

    Cheers,
    Ni Juin

You are welcome, I am glad that it is working as it should.

Whenever you have any trouble, just feel free to post in the forum, and somebody will come and help you out ??

    Have a nice day!

Have the same issue, but this was not the solution.
    Background:
    – The problematic url is satcherinstitute.org/wp-admin
    – The site is being hosted by 1&1
    – The former developer did not use 1&1’s WordPress app, rather installed it using FTP.
    – I have tried several solutions from this forum including editing the HOME and URL options in the MSQL database to no avail

I feel like I’m flying in the dark because I cannot assess at what point in the dashboard start-up process the problem is located.
