help me!! with my mag theme- how to insert pictures into slideshow

how do i insert photos that appear in the slideshow that is visible on the main page. I thought by inserting a “featured image” that would display the image in the slide show but all i get is a small icon in the top left hand corner – a white box with a red X in it?

What am I doing wrong?

Is there something I’m missing? Please help
