Help! I totally broke my site/blog

Ok, I had my blog in the public folder, but decided I needed a new index, as the blog is no longer the primary focus of my website. So I moved what I thought was all the WP items to a new folder in public called “blog”. The blog displayed properly, but comments, archives, and all the links just went back to the site index. Not good. Then I moved some folders, and now I got nothing.
So what is the best way to back everything up, and reinstall WP? I had someone else do the initial install, so it’s a mess, and I don’t full know where everything goes. I’d like to do it myself, so I will be familiar with the structure.
Urgent assistance appreciated.
