• Hi guys!

First of all, thanks to anyone who’s able to help or who takes the time to read this with intentions to help.

I built a WordPress website for a friend (www.Lionstoneinn.ca) a few days ago. I built it on my hosting account with Godaddy (on www.HALOphax.com/LionstoneNew), and his domain was with BudgetNames.ca.

My goal was to keep everything on my hosting account (delux linux with cPanel) and just use nameservers to point the domain to the website on my hosting package. I know a little about design and wordpress, but hosting/backend stuff isn’t my forte. So I hired a freelancer to help.

He seemed to make it work – when you go to Lionstoneinn.ca everything looks great, but once you click on an interior page, the original URL shows instead of the mapped on! He said there’s noting he can do, its “just how it works”!!

Is this true? Is there anything I can do? PLEASE HELP!

You can’t point DNS to a subfolder like that. The freelancer you hired was wrong; it’s simply never going to work that way. He/she should never have tried.

It is possible to make it work right. Read GoDaddy’s instructions on how to add a domain to your hosting account. Basically, add the domain Lionstoneinn.ca to your GoDaddy hosting account (or someone else’s hosting account). That will give you a separate folder for the site, a top level folder that you can point DNS to. Go to BudgetNames.ca and point DNS to GoDaddy (or the other hosting company) with the nameservers the host gives you.

Now you need to move that WordPress install from HALOphax.com/LionstoneNew to the new folder for the domain Lionstoneinn.ca . See Moving WordPress ? WordPress Codex and WordPress Serialized PHP Search Replace Tool. Read all those instructions; it’s not difficult, but you will need to find/replace URLs in the database.

If you can’t do the work yourself, consider looking for a reputable person on https://jobs.wordpress.net/ or https://directory.codepoet.com or https://upwork.com (FYI, it’s not a good idea to respond to work offers from random forum users who have read about your issues.)

OH NO! this is terrible news… The freelancer (from a reputable website) assured me it was possible..

Okay, so for the solution you mentioned, are you saying I can add Lionstoneinn.ca to my hosting account without doing a Domain Transfer from BudgetNames to Godaddy?

I’ll look into this now. I need this done for the morning. AHH!!

    Thanks again *panic

without doing a Domain Transfer from BudgetNames to Godaddy…

A domain registration transfer has absolutely nothing to do with this. Your point the domain at Budgetnames to GoDaddy, not move it to GoDaddy.

Read GoDaddy’s docs on how to add an add-on domain to your hosting account.

Thanks so much Mark – much appreciated

Yes, that’s how you add a domain in a hosting account.

And read how to move WP carefully. The freelancer will have changed some/all URLs in the database, and those need to be changed. They may have only changed them in wp-config.php since you say you go to any other pages and they don’t work. Hard to say excatly what they did; except we do know they did it wrong.

    Mark

I spoke with the freelancer, and he says this is the setup we have now – as you suggested above. It looks like he’s right.

Assuming that you agree after looking at this picture above, can you suggest somewhere I can look to find out why the re-direct works fine for the homepage but not the other 4 interior pages of the wordpress site? Did he forget to add the new URLS somewhere? Is this a permalink Wp-admin issue?

Thanks again Mark. You’ve been a big help so far

    All fixed. Thanks

Could a MOD please delete this thread as the owner of the site is now getting frelancer spam regarding the issue I motioned in the posts above.

    Thanks ??
