If I wanted to add something else in its place, like an image gallery or a widget, would i get the code and place it in the same place?

If it’s a piece of code, then yes. A simply drop-in replacement should work – although you might need to do a little bit of CSS tweaking to get it looking right.

If you want to use a widget from Appearance -> Widgets, then that area will need to be widget-aware. You also risk wiping out your current content in that area but you can sort this out by either adding in fresh widgets to replace the lost content or just puling out the widget.
