Local Install Of Live Site

  • Hi there,

    I’ve delayed launching my blog for about 2 months now as I still can’t work out how to get the local version on my mac. I’ve attempted this with MAMP twice and also with desktop server.

    When originally setting up wordpress I used a different computer (one i do not have access to now) and so I have no installation files.. is this the main problem?

    At the moment my site has a coming soon mode active.
    I am hosting with 123.reg and have access to my directory/files.

    Please if anyone can spare a few minutes to point me in the right direction i’d be forever in your debt!

    No, but not having access to the database (or a WordPress backup file) definitely would be. The unique content that you write is in the database, not in the WordPress files.

    You are probably better off installing WordPress on your domain and live hosting account and then password-protecting the site while you work on the site until it is ready to go live.

    Most web hosts have one-click installs for WordPress. And transferring a site from a local server to a remote server can be quite troublesome.

    Hello again Anthony,
    (hoping someone is still here!)

    Today I made some changes and then went to my hosting as suggested (123.reg)
    They said anything to do with coding is not their forte and suggested I contacted a web developer.
    I asked them about assistance with taking my site offline for future amendments (what i’ve always wanted to do) and they can’t help (same as 2 months ago).
    Not really sure where to go from here.
    I’m currently blocked from my wordpress log in as I changed my theme php directly in wordpress..
    I don’t want this to happen again so i’d like to get a offline version working despite the trouble.

    Anyone out there with any advice? It’ll be great-fully received.
