Headers issue after Polylang install (non-clickable + square/triangle symbol)

After installing the Polylang plugin and changing the settings on the visibility of the flag icons (in Appearance > Menus), the headers on my main page were not clickable anymore, and also these square and triangle icons appeared above each header element.

After deinstalling, clearing cache the problem stayed unfortunately. I tried to reset the settings I changed and reinstall -> deinstall, but the problem persists. I could however make the header elements clickable again by changing the Open on mouse event to hoover. But these symbols remain.

I have the feeling it may be a result of a conflict with our WPBakery Page Builder plugin. Therefore I now want to try a different language plugin, but I cannot seem to reset the problem to how it was before installing Polylang.
