You are using the boxed layout. You need to “unbox” it, in order for your header to be full width, so that it looks much similar to your example site’s header.

Navigate to Appearance -> Customize -> Global settings -> General Design Options :
Find the setting -> Boxed Layout
Uncheck and save changes.
