• Well, this may sound like a dumb question..
but i’ve tried to download the he_IL.po file – which wasn’t easy:
i pasted the wiki content into my pc (windows based) as a utf-8 file, and then uploaded the file to my linux server- but then after the ftp upload (with bin or without bin upload) 3 weired characters (“?ˉ????”) were added to the beginning of the file.
unable to get rid of these charcters (using vi) without screwing the character coding on the file, i used a binary-editor on linux to get rid of these 3 characters, and ran msgfmt on it, created the .mo file in the correct location, and changed the WPLANG entry on wp-config.php file.
and then… got gibrish instead of the hebrew titles on the blog.
has anyone experienced something similar? it’s definitely not a problem in the po file, as when i view it on my windows-based pc i can clearly see the hebrew messages- my guess is that it’s a pc-linux charset issue.

  • Those 3 characters are the UTF-8 identification; It’s good to have them, but gettext doesn’t know how to interpert them. Use a lame editor (edit.com in Windows, pico/nano/joe in Linux) to remove them, than gettext will translate the strings as if they were regular latin-1 encoding.
It will work fine, since the PHP files do declare a UTF-8 encoding to the browser.
