Having trouble with password protection

what steps are you using when you are trying to password protect pages?
which page are you trying to protect?
have you considered using a membership plugin to protect specific content areas?

I currently have a page called Resources (not in menu, I don’t want our students or parents of students clicking on it and then being confused/asking lots of questions). This will house content for instructors only.

When I am viewing the page in the dashboard, in the Publish box to the right you can select Password Protected under Visibility. I have that selected just on this page, and a password set on it.

When I log out of my account (when I am logged in, it just shows me my content of course) and try the page I see the box to enter the password, and I type it, hit the button, nothing happens. I see the same blank page and the same password box and button.

I looked at just password related plugins, but they all seemed to piggyback on the existing functionality that I can’t get to work so I gave up on those and tried to troubleshoot the issue at its core, to no avail.

Would this membership type plugin utilize the password protection that’s built in? Or no? I am intrigued now, this may be a reasonable workaround (and of course I can also search for info on these plugins later, when it’s not approaching midnight…).

for SIMPLE, short term content restriction where every user has same password (hard to manage in long term) i would use the built in password function.

for situations with many users that might change over time and long term protection of specific content…I would use a membership plugin. I have used Paid Memberships Pro (can be used for free memberships too). i have found that it can help fine tune content that is to be shown to particular groups of members.

otherwise, i have found the regular documentation has worked for me.

i currently use it on 2 websites that I manage on to restrict content access to members depending on which membership levels they have selected: free, monthly membership, annual membership etc.

there are several other good membership plugins available—each having different characteristics.

recommendation: add your contact info/phone #/email in a more prominent area to make it easier for customers to get in touch with you. consider adding phone # to header/footer if you don’t want to have a “contact us” page
