    Hi Folks
I’d like to be able to add a physical product (that needs a shipping address and a shipping charge) and a downloadable product (that does not require shipping nor a shipping charge) to be added to the same cart so that when the buyer completes the purchase in paypal the buyer is sent back to the website to a page showing the download link (and where a receipt is sent to the buyer that also contains the link to the downloadable product). But this is not a bundle, sometimes buyers will only choose the doanloadble (pdf) at others times just a physical product from a range of products. But they may want to buy both physcial and downloadable at the same time. So in the cart shipping will be charged for the physical product/s but not for the downloadable. Is this possible in woo commerce and if so does anyone know how to do it? Thanks in advance.

  • Hey Alan,

Great question. You can have mixed carts with downloadable and physical products in the same order. If the order has physical products there will be shipping options provided, even if the order is mixed. If only downloadable products are ordered there won’t be shipping options. The system will automatically detect these and adjust accordingly.

There is an option to grant access to downloadable files once an order has been paid for, even if it isn’t completed. You can enable that by going to WooCommerce > Settings > Products > Downloadable Products and checking the box there for this.

If you run into any trouble, please let us know.

Thank you, Three Sons. I missed the initial response so I’m glad you got back in touch.

Am I right in saying that a downloadable product, such as a pdf, should not be classed as a virtual product? And that a shipping class should be created for $0.00 so that when creating the downloadable product this shipping class can be selected when setting the shipping details?

    Hey @alanmuscat,

That’s a great question. Typically, stores set downloadable products to be “virtual” too. When that’s enabled, the shipping options are disabled for that product so you don’t have to worry about any special configuration. I would make downloadable products virtual unless you do need to ship something physical to go along with them.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Cheers
