have used a number of times, highly recommend
-
I have used the free version a dozen times or so. I have used the pro version three times, for the same somewhat large and complex site. I found the plugin easy to install and use. Although I did have problems, most and perhaps all of them stemmed primarily from my inexperience with the environment to which I was moving the WordPress blog (Amazon Web Services). Even so, the plugin developer supported me every step of the way, above and beyond the call of duty! The upgrade from Prime Mover 1.0.5 to 1.0.6 really seemed to help with the large site — server timeouts were eliminated with 1.0.6, without any need for reconfiguration on the server side.
Two pro features turned out to be very helpful for me:
1) The ability to exclude files from the export (“export filters”). There was one very large file (1.3GB) which I didn’t even need on the target site. It was convenient to simply exclude it, speeding up both the export and the import.
2) Even nicer for me was the “Restore backup zip from a remote URL” feature when I was importing the large site. Using this feature, I first FTP’d the Prime Mover export file to a location on AWS (an S3 bucket). Then when I did the restore (import) it took minutes instead of hours. This made the whole process more reliable and convenient. I could also use this feature to maintain online backups of my site, allowing relatively quick recovery in case of a serious problem.
I migrated from single-site to multisite and vice versa multiple times, and this worked flawlessly. (The target systems on AWS were Bitnami WordPress AMIs.)
I did sometimes have to do some minor “fix-ups” after import. For instance, on one occasion many of the links in WordPress page content ended up using the IP address of the target rather than the domain name. This didn’t seem to cause any actual problems, but nevertheless I fixed it with a search-and-replace in the WordPress database using phpmyadmin.
All in all, I highly recommend the plugin and the developer.
