• Hi all

It may seem a really simple thing to do but I have got myself confused by lots of different advice out there. It’s my first website so I’ll put down in points what’s happened..

    1. Set up a wordpress website through hosting company using domain jennynicol.com as the site was being created.

    2. finished website so need to use an excising domain https://www.ballogie-estate.co.uk. This domain name is being hosted by someone else and need to stay that way.

    3. I gave the IP address of my site to the domain hosting and they pointed it to my site.

    4. changed https://www.ballogie-esate.co.uk to the main hosting – then I couldn’t access my wordpress site.

    5. My hosting company added jennynicol.com as an addon domain – i still can’t access my wordpress site.

    – I am unsure if all the steps above were necessary / or there was another way of having https://www.ballogie-estate.co.uk as the new domain (although hosted my someone else)

    – I need to do now to get my site to display how it used to when I had jennynicol.com as my domain.

Your help would be really appreciated, I’ve spent days trying to get this sorted and I need the website working properly as soon as possible!

    Thank you very much

    Jenny

thank you for the quick reply however currently I am not able to access my wordpress site – therefore I cannot follow any of the steps indicated in that codex.

also the excising domain is being hosted by someone else.

I would like to know if I need to undo any of the steps I have done above if so what I would then have to do to get https://www.ballogie-estate.co.uk to be the address that people type in to get to my jennynicol.com site – though the jennynicol.com would not show and each page in the site would be eg https://www.ballogie-estate.co.uk/for-let,
    https://www.ballogie-estate.co.uk/for-sale

    thanks

    Jenny

    Is this understanding correct?

    You installed WP at jennynicol.com

You want WP to be accessible at ballogie-estate.co.uk

Because your step three makes little sense:

I gave the IP address of my site to the domain hosting and they pointed it to my site.

Do you mean you told them ‘My server, where jennynicol.com lives, has the IP 123.45.6.8. Point ballogie-estate.co.uk to that UP?’

If that’s the case, then everything is on YOUR server (jennynicol.com) and all you should have had to do was change the URL in WP (or in the DB). If you have no access to where the files are installed, and no access to the DB, then someone who HAS access must go in and make the changes.

Right now https://jennynicol.com/ is blank and https://www.ballogie-estate.co.uk/for-let redirects to https://www.ballogie-estate.co.uk/property/for-let

If the server that needs to host the site is under someone else’s control, undo what you did and take control of YOUR domain. Then MOVE the files (don’t redirect anything) to their server and their domain, remembering to change the URLs in your database with a nice search/replace). You did this the weird and hard way and there’s a reason we don’t suggest it.

I know, I realise i have done this the completely wrong way!

    Yes I did do this
Do you mean you told them 'My server, where jennynicol.com lives, has the IP 123.45.6.8. Point ballogie-estate.co.uk to that UP?'

I did have access to my worpress website when the domain was jennynicol.com but when https://www.ballogie-estate.co.uk was made the main domain I couldn’t access my wordpress login page.

ok so I need to undo everything – make jennynicol.com the main domain name and delete https://www.ballogie-estate.co.uk as a domain and then point https://www.ballogie-estate.co.uk away from the IP server.

I want the site that I’ve made to stay with the original hosting – it’s just the https://www.ballogie-estate.co.uk name that needs to be hosted somewhere else. (which is why it was pointed to the IP server)

I’m sorry if I’m not begin clear enough..let me know if I need to be more specific.

the ballogie name needs to stay with them for security reasons as it links to other parts of their company – email etc

Well, okay. So it’s YOUR server. Can you get to the database?

yes through the cpanel – though I’m not very confident with using it.
Would the simplest thing to do be-

    1. undo everything

    2. change the name to something like https://www.ballogie.estate.co.uk (changing the – for a . )

    3. then have https://www.ballogie-estate.co.uk pointed to the my website

    – the question I have with this is would it be possible to just change my website to https://www.ballogie-estate.co.uk – but as it is a bought domain I guess I can’t do that.

thanks very much for your help!

forgot to say at the moment the domain has been pointed to the old website.

Honestly, I’d undo it all and start over, HOWEVER. You are going to need to learn how to do some of this stuff in cPanel, because it’s a required skill.

The best thing would be to, instead of moving your client to YOUR server, move the blog to their server.

Hey thank you very much for your time and patience! I’ll get myself up to speed.
