    Hello Everyone,

I could really use some help/advice here. I run the following blog:
    https://www.wiretotheear.com/

I did the automatic upgrade to 3.5 and although the site is still online when I try and log in via wp-admin I get the following message:

“Database Update Required WordPress has been updated! Before we send you on your way, we have to update your database to the newest version. The update process may take a little while, so please be patient.”

When I click “Update WordPress Database” I just get a blank screen with the WordPress logo on top… it never completes anything.

I’m a novice at the backend of the this stuff. So far I tried increased my PHP memory to 128MB but it has not fixed the issue.

Any advice would be really appreciated!

    Hi Esmi (and good morning!),

I finally have all the files uploaded into phpMyAdmin however there is one part of the 15 that produced the error. What should I do? I can open that file in BBEdit. It’s about 5000 lines.

Again this was the error it gave me:

Should I try to upload it again or edit the file or?

    Thanks.

I’d suggest making a copy of the file and editing out the problem line. You may find that you have to make quite few edits before the file will upload fully.

    Hi Esmi,

I am VERY pleased to tell you the site is working again! There were only 2 lines that tripped up myPHPadmin during upload of the backup databse. After deleted them and pointing my wp-config file to the new database I was able to log into the backend. However all the posts were missing. On a whim I then pointed the wp-config file back to the old database just to check if the posts were still there. Strangely it allowed me to log-into the back end so essentially I am now back at WordPress 3.4.2 just as I was before I tried to upgrade.

When I was pointing wp-config to the new uploaded database why were the posts missing? Do I need to point something there?

Then again maybe it doesn’t matter and I should now just fix my old install. Find the 2 missing lines again and delete them from the old database?

Either way I assume my next step is to turn on debugging mode and fix anything there, turn off all plug-ins, temporarily switch to the twentytwelve theme and then try again to upgrade to 3.5. This part will take me more than a few days… want to carefully fix everything but also post some stories for a bit.

Thanks a million I mean it!!! I’ve learned quite a lot too.

    Woohoo!!

Do I need to point something there?

No. The lack of posts suggests that the import didn’t go as smoothly as you thought.

However, now that you’re back using the old database, I’d suggest creating an export file as well as backing up the database before you try upgrading again. Given the issues you do have with the new db import, I’d be a little concerned that there are some lingering problems with the old db. The export should extract just the site’s content (don’t bother with attachments) that you can re-use as a last resort in case anything does go wring again.

How large is the database? Roughly how many Posts & Pages do you have on the site?

Ok I created an export file and will definitely backup the database again before the next upgrade attempt. Maybe I will try a different method of backup (not use the plug-in).

There are 1692 published posts and 4 pages. The backup generated by the “WordPress Database Backup” plug-in is 911.9 MB. The uploads folder is 336.4 MB.

Again… super thanks!! Back to posting and my life for a bit! I will probably wait a few days or a week to try the upgrade again.

That’s a big database! You might want to have a word with your hosts before you try another upgrade. See if they can temporarily raise your PHP memory and max-execution_time limits to avoid any upgrade failures.

You might also want to look at removing all old post revisions from the database to try and slim it down a little. There are a couple of plugins available for cleaning up your database.

Oh I never knew that was considered large. I will definitely remove old post revisions and try some other thing to clean it up. I’m glad we have this thread for me to refer to. I think it may end up helping some other people too.

What were the lines you removed, Oliver?

Hello Oliver! I have the same problem,What were the lines you removed?

Why are you using an old copy of WordPress? Were you aware that your site is currently running a very real risk of being hacked. You need to upgrade WordPress asap.

Thanks Esmi, i have the same problem but in my updgrade into the version 3.5.2, i cant access to the WP dashboard, and the message of update the database is similar how the Oliver Case…

How do you know it’s the same problem if you’re using a different version of WordPress?
