• A couple of months ago, when I was away from my blog for a few weeks, it was evidently hacked. Suddenly, there were insane amounts of comment spam. Most of my plug-ins (including Akismet) had been turned off. Other preferences had been reset to the default. I’ve been cleaning up the mess but have been unable to figure out the source of one problem, which I suspect is the heart of the problem. Whenever my blog is accesses, an “unresponsive script” warning comes up. The script does eventually finish, which leads me to suspect that there is a long script somewhere doing things that are leading to the other outstanding problem, which is that no search engines send me traffic anymore. My html skills are rudimentary. Please, can somebody either tell me what to do to find and delete the script(s) that must have been inserted somewhere and/or tell me how I can get someone else to do it? I’m kind of desperate at this point. Thanks!

  • Delete the word press directory and then upgrade to the latest version of wordpress. (Before deleting copy the password and database configuration from wp-config.php for the new installation)

WARNING: You may want to backup your theme (CSS and files) but it can also be altered with 3rd party SPAM.

Thanks for your help. I’m trying to avoid upgrading, as it seems that everybody loses all of their old posts when they do so. However, I did find what looks to be like the source of the problem: a malicious snippet of code inserted in the footer.php file, listing thousands of invisible links and swelling the file to more than a megabyte. Now suddenly having problems with stats, so I suspect the problem’s not as resolved as I’d hoped.
