    Hi!

I am eager to play with Gutenberg. I switched over to try it after the recent update, but when opening a new post, the post page took a long time to load. I began to have doubts as to whether my theme was compatible, so I stopped the loading page and switched back to the classic version.

I then found out my theme is compatible (Generate Press Premium), so that doesn’t appear to be the problem.

I decided to give Gutenberg another ago as it appears I was too hasty. I have gone into settings and reset Gutenberg as default in Writing. The option I selected is:

“Use the Gutenberg editor by default and include optional links back to the Classic editor.”

However, when I start a new post or edit an old one, it just defaults to classic. (I’m clicking on “Edit” not “Edit (classic)”.

Also, after it opened in the default classic style, I tried clicking on the “Edit (Gutenberg)” which appears in the brown menu header bar. It just reloaded the classic post page.

I noticed the Yoast SEO plugin doesn’t work on the new post page (the classic style it opened into) and I have also read a recent post of someone else having a similar issue with Yoast SEO as well.

I’ve downloaded the Health Check, and my server is using Database server version 5.5.59 no 5.6. This aspect seems to be the only thing without a green tick. I know its highly recommended, but I was wondering if this was essential for Gutenberg to work with WordPress? I recently asked my shared host when we would be updating to 5.6, and I could not get a definitive answer. They only recently upgraded to 5.5.59, so it might not be anytime soon.

So my questions for now are:
    1. As I had deactivated Gutenberg, do I need to do anything else to reactivate it besides changing the selection under Settings | Writing? (The plugin is showing as installed still and activated.) If so, how do I reactivate it?
    2. Is 5.6 essential for Gutenberg to work? Or, should I work through the troubleshooting without annoying my shared hosting provider too much about upgrading?

    Cheers
    -Tina

    Hi,

The database version should not be a problem for Gutenberg, so that’s not it.

From what you’ve told us here, it sounds like you have the Classic Editor plugin installed. It should still work fine, but would you mind trying to disable that plugin just in case and seeing if things start working for you. Also make sure the Gutenberg plugin is activated as well, just to double check in case something strange is going on there (you may try deactivating it and re-activating it for good measure).

In case this helps, I am also using Generate Press premium and I have the same issue. Switching to Twenty seventeen did not make any difference.

I found the solution in my case, perhaps in yours also. You need to disable sections in Generate Press.

That would be a likely cause, yes. Seems “Sections” is a minimalist pagebuilder, and may nt be Gutenberg compatible yet even if the theme it self is, as that’s a premium addon.

Ah, thanks for your input Karen and Marius.

I think I will wait for Sections to be made compatible (they’re working on it) as most of my main pages use Sections and disabling will destroy the layout.

Marius, I’ll keep in mind to deactivate and reactivate the plugin when Sections is ready to be used with Gutenberg.

    Thanks again.

(I’ll resolve this thread since I now know the issue.)

I had resolved this thread – not sure if I need to start a new one – so let me know if that’s the case. I have reopened it though as I’m now told Sections is compatible and I’m also responding to the above by Marius.

Unfortunately, I’m still having problems activating Guttenberg.

    I disabled the classic editor.
I then deactivated then reactivated Gutenberg, but when editing or starting a new post, the classic version appears.

    I have now tried troubleshooting.
    Reactiving Gutenberg.
But I get the message: “sorry your not allowed to access this page”.
After exiting the troubleshooter and when I try to edit or start a new past, it still defaults to the classic editor.
Now looking to see if it’s a BPS Pro plugin firewall issue.

    Hello,

I am also having problems changing my website back to Gutenberg. I am still learning how to work my website and reading the above answers still leaves me confused. In one answers it says to disable Generate Press. Not sure where this is and the other answer is to disable my classic editor plugin which I cannot find. Any assistance with getting me back to Gutenberg would be greatly appreciated.

This is an old thread. It would probably be better if you started a new thread. And please state what version of WordPress you are working with.

Generate Press is a theme, if you did not install it, you do not have it.
The classic editor is a plugin you would have installed.

Not sure on how to start a new thread. I am using Word 5.0 it was upgraded to that version recently. I did not have the classic editor plugin and I loaded it up. I have it now with the Gutenberg plugin. I deactivated the classic editor and activated the Gutenberg plugin. I still have the same problem. I now understand that Generate press is a theme. I am guessing now that my current custom theme is not compatible with Gutenberg.
