Gutenberg & classic HTML ends up in blank pages

    I’ve edited a existing page on my website. I converted parts to the Gutenberg-blocks and let the custom HTML part as it was. No problems that far. I’ve inserted a gallery and wanted the new images to contain hyperlinks. In Gutenberg i can’t find a way to do so.

    So i’ve insterted the gallery via Gutenberg en switched over to the classic-editor and added the hyperlinks ‘the classic way’. But since then all the page are going blank when trying to edit them. When i removed the hyperlinks it seems to work again. But it appears to me that you can use both gutenberg and classic HTML with another if needed to.

    What i’ve added is a little bit of href-coding to create a hyperlink attached to the gallery i’ve added in Gutenberg.

    I have had the same “blank page” phenomenon on creating a new page or trying to edit an existing one. This as from the last update of Gutenberg. My theme is Hueman Pro. I switched off the extension pending resolution.

    Hiya @peenvogel,

    What kind of links are you thinking of?

    If you wish to link each image to various other URLs, that’s not a feature that’s provided, but if you wish to link the images to an attachment page, or link directly to the image it self (generally used when using lightboxes for example) that’s possible.

    When adding the gallery block, extend the block settings (right hand side panel, you may have to click the cog in the top right corner to toggle its visibility). There should be a Link To alternative here, as well as a way for you to make some modifications to the new gallery block layout.

    What i did was the following. I’ve inserted a gallery and linked the individual URL’s to the image representing the page. See ->

    At that moment the images became clickable but from that moment on the gutenberg editor crashed in my situation.

    Ahh, OK, I follow you.

    So the first issue here is that you mention opening it in the Classic Editor after creating it as blocks, this isn’t supported, there is no backwards compatibility for opening block-content in the Classic Editor and the content then becomes malformed.

    It is possible to edit the HTML of the gallery block directly from the Gutenberg editor, but you will get a warning that the block has been modified externally, and you won’t be able to easily edit it again unless you convert it t a block all over again, which will lose the links you added. This is because the linking of individual images like you’ve done isn’t a supported feature, and as such isn’t recognized.

    I’m sorry I don’t have any more exciting news than cause and effect here, although there may be (or might come) new plugins that introduce galleries with the functionality you seek, it’s not something that is on the radar for the built in one at this time.
