Forgive me if my questions are obvious or I’m not understanding correctly, I’m fairly new to using GTM.

Currently I’m using TheNextWeb’s GTM Container https://github.com/thenextweb/gtm and deploying directly in the header/body.

I see your plugin has many similar tracking features built in.

How does this work with the GTM code? Does the plugin change either head/body snippet?

Is this similar to adding tags, variables, triggers via the TNW container or the GTM dashboard?

Is there any specific benefit to using a plugin instead of a managed container like TNW’s to do this?

Also, I saw in another thread that you addressed Google Optimize where you advised the user to add the Optimize tag manually to GTM.

However, Google seems to advise against this: https://support.google.com/360suite/optimize/answer/7359264?hl=en&ref_topic=6197443

it is still recommended that you install the Analytics tracking code with the Optimize plugin directly on the page (as opposed to deploying Optimize through a tag in GTM)….While it’s possible to deploy the Optimize plugin via Google Tag Manager, it will often result in significantly increased latency.

Is this possible while still using your plugin?

    Hi Scamaz,

Thanks for raising this question, I do not think it is obvious as it can be a valid question for other users as well.

    Let me explain the differences:

The container of TheNextWeb is a general template that can be used on many websites: on WordPress sites or even on other platforms. It includes several extra features like YouTube video tracking, scroll tracking and so on. You “only” need to put the container code into your site manually and to edit some variables inside your GTM container after you’ve imported the corresponding .json file.

My plugin is similar to this but specifically for WordPress. It will not work on other CMS systems and platforms. My plugin can add the container code automatically so that you do not need to edit your template files and it can also give you codes to track YouTube videos or scroll depth but for example it does not cover page visibility tracking (yet).

Another important difference is that with my plugin you need to build the GTM container by yourself, my plugin will not create tags, triggers or variables. This is basically because I believe that there isn’t a common setup that can be used on every website, I think each site needs a custom measurement plan and setup.

My plugin can also give you help by adding some extra WordPress specific features like WooCommerce tracking or Contact Form 7 tracking.

I hope that comparison helps you find the right solution for you.

    Have a great day,
    Thomas Geiger

Thanks that was a very clear and informative response.

I don’t know if you saw my info about the Optimize tag though? If you can add the Optimize tag manually while using your plugin what would be the best way to do that?

Implementing Google Optimize is indeed a bit tricky but if you are deploying your GA using GTM you do not have much option.

If you are using my plugin, you can of course add the Optimize Tag via GTM but the mentioned latency can occur anyway. This “by design” and because of my plugin.

A planned plugin feature is the ability to add the page hiding snippet using my plugin into the page but I do not have an ETA for this.
