Groups=Roles?

From a technical perspective, what are groups? I have installed some other plugins that interact with roles as standard behavior and in some cases the Groups are showing up alongside roles and in other cases they aren’t. We are seriously considering this plugin for a client but we need it to be able to interact with a plugin I haven’t been able to test like roles would.
