I’m trying to restrict a menu item, but the menu item doesn’t show any options related to Groups.
Even selected in options > nav_menu_item does not appear the option to select access restriction in menu items.
    I hope you understand.
I also sent a file for Brazilian Portuguese translation.
    Thanks.

  • Hi Eric,

    Good afternoon.

You can restrict the menu item by restricting the actual page/post.

For instance, let’s assume you have a page called News and News is present on your menu. If you want News to be visible only to registered users for instance, you should edit the News page and set the group to Registered.

This would restrict News from every user that does not belong to the Registered group from seeing the Menu item and the News page.

    STAY SAFE and be awesome!
    Best,
    Eugen.

    Hi!

Just thinking about this a bit further … would it make sense to offer a UI on menu items so that menu items themselves could be restricted even though the related item is not? I think it would be rather confusing for items that can be restricted themselves. We should however mention in the documentation that some of the post types that appear don’t necessarily have a UI where one can set those restrictions.

Maybe in some cases it could make sense just because you want to show or hide particular items depending on what group a user is a member of. Not so much because you have them restricted, more because it’s more fitting for the member’s context.

I think we should consider those cases and at some point might want to have a UI that allows to cover those cases … further comments are welcome but I’ll mark this request as solved.

    Cheers

That’s great, where have you sent it? We don’t seem to have received anything …

I use a directory plugin, this plugin has a page to add new listings. So I want certain registered users to be able to access the custom link item, but since I don’t have this option in Groups, I’m doing it as follows.
I use Groups to restrict a blank page and use the Redirection plugin to redirect to the plugin’s page directory. So I get the precise result, restrict the menu item needed, custom link.
With Groups I can incredibly restrict pages, but I can’t restrict a custom link in the menu item.
I found a plugin that can enable this Groups function in menu items, but this function is paid. I also see that using 2 or more plugins for this is not the best option.
That’s why I decided to put this function to restrict the menu items here on the forum.
There are other plugins that generally restrict menu items by setting by default WordPress groups, but I need to set by specific groups.
Thank you for your attention and I hope you can understand my need. I’m not a programmer, but I’m passionate about WordPress.

Thanks for explaining how you approach it, that is very helpful to understand your case.

I have one suggestion that might make it easier if the directory plugin provides a shortcode or a block for this:

I use a directory plugin, this plugin has a page to add new listings.

If you can place a shortcode or block on the page you are already protecting with Groups, then you wouldn’t need to do the redirect at all. But there is another aspect, if the page to add new listings is a normal page, you could even just restrict that. If it’s its own post type, you could enable access restrictions on that post type with Groups and see if you can add a menu item to that post type page instead of using a custom link.

In any case, I still see that in some cases it makes sense to just provide a simple way to hide/protect menu items, so this is something we could integrate.

Does not allow me to shortcode and blocks. And I can’t access the listing page. I just have the path, so I would use the custom link.
Anyway Groups has helped me and I hope they can add this function to the menu items. It would be very helpful.
    Very grateful for your answer.
