Grid just hangs when images are disabled

I am using the media grid to serve content through links (selecting ‘link’ as the media type when creating a grid item). The problem I am having during testing for accessibility is that the grid just sits and and hangs indefinitely when the browser is set to block images.
In order to have valid HTML, don’t images need to display an ‘alt’ text description when that content is blocked by the browser? I would like the links to continue to serve this content even if the thumbnail images don’t or can’t load.
Please help. ??
