Grey square where map should be, on localhost installation

I’ve been testing the free version on my local site (localhost) and have had some issues with the CM Locations. The CM Map Routes plugin is working fine but the map for the locations plugin isn’t showing up (just a grey square) – this is in the “add/edit location” admin screen and in the front end “view locations” or view single location. I’m using the same Google API key for both plugins so that’s not the problem.
Also I noticed that when adding or editing a location, all Font Awesome characters are missing (I just see tall rectangles), both in the page and on the admin bar at the top. (it’s ok for the routes).
Could this be related to running on a localhost environment? Anyone else finding this?
(I cleared the cache – in the settings and for my browser, but that didn’t help.)
