I just installed Wordfence for the first time. When I went to the settings I get a grey overlay on the screen and unable to go further. How do I get this fixed?

Hi @sscoder, Thank you for reaching out to us.

I’d suggest clearing cache (site plugins and local browser) and disabling all other plugins except for Wordfence, then trying again to see if there’s a plugin or theme conflict causing the issue. You could also revert to a default theme, such as Twenty Twenty-Three.

If it works as expected, then reenable your plugins and theme one by one until the issue recurs to help find the cause.

If there’s a plugin or theme conflict, I would suggest changing the Wordfence Web Application Firewall into Learning Mode. From the Wordfence Dashboard, click on Manage WAF. Then you will see Basic Firewall Options > Web Application Firewall Status. Change the option to Learning Mode. Now confirm that you can view settings page. Once done, switch the WAF from Learning Mode back to Enabled and Protecting and test to see that you can still view the settings page.

https://www.wordfence.com/help/firewall/learning-mode/ is an amazing resource for learning more about the WAF and learning mode.

Let me know how it goes.

    Thanks,

    Mark.

I disabled all the plugins except for Wordfrence, Cleared cache, and use a default theme. The screen is still grey.

Ok. I got it to work. the popup windows were going behind the grey screen. So that wasn’t letting me do anything. I uninstalled after I did the above and that worked.

Quick question. is there a way for this plugin to redirect the WP login url?

for example: instead of the /wp-login you can turn it to /loginsite.

Hi @sscoder, thanks for getting back to us.

Wordfence doesn’t offer an inbuilt option to hide wp-admin or wp-login.php for this reason. With certain “security through obscurity” methods, this would only serve to slightly slow down somebody with malicious intent rather than stop them.

Our thoughts on altering the wp-login URL is discussed in this video which is provided for your information: https://www.wordfence.com/blog/2017/10/should-you-hide-wordpress-login-page/

Using strong account passwords and two-factor authentication, along with always keeping your WordPress and plugin versions up-to-date should offer the best level of security.

    Thanks,

    Mark.
