As a plugin it has worked flawlessly for the couple of years that it has been installed on our website. Luckily we never had to use it..

All of a sudden our website, hosted on one-dot-com, was temporarily suspended with no explanation but a request to make contact with them,

It turns out that UpdraftPlus is on one.com’s “discouraged” plugin list and triggers an immediate suspension of the website until deactivated.

“Website is high on resources consumption due to the use of discouraged plugin updraft/ updraftplus View all discouraged plugins here: one-docs-dot-com/discouraged-plugins”

Sadly, plugin had to be deactivated and removed.

    Hi,

Sorry to hear that. Reading the document, I see that one.com discourage all backup plugins, and suggest as an alternative that you purchase their own proprietary backup product ( https://help.one.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005586029-Discouraged-WordPress-plugins#step-2 ).

Well, all I can say is that I’d discourage anyone from doing that: if the same company hosts both your website and your backups, then that’s a single point of failure putting your website at risk. It’s happened to people before (that their website host disappeared overnight, or had a catastrophic hack that deleted both their site and its backups), and it’d be very surprising if it never happened again. Website owners tend to like knowing that whatever happens to their website, then they have their own independent backups.

I completely agree, they also enforced this with an immediate suspension of our website until plugin is deactivated and removed. No prior warning, heads-up or any form of communication was made – just *zap* and then an e-mail to contact them to learn of how to lift suspension.

Their “Restore” product is however included in most plans – but yes, I still have my eggs in the same basket.
