However, I do not agree with you.
As stated before, a media category is something completely different from the location where the media is stored.
You don’t bother where WordPress is storing the meta information for posts, do you?
There should be enough functionality to manipulate the media from the management consoles. If there is something missing, we can provide a plugin for that as I did with the bulk assignments.
Suppose you could store media files in a user defined folder, how would WordPress handle these files? How to treat them when they are replaced by the user? I strongly believe that WordPress is the only authority to handle the storage of the media files. Just as you don’t determine in what sectors of the harddisk the file pieces need to be stored, you leave that also to the operating system or device driver.
There is one argument I can support to control the location where the files are stored, and that is when you would want to off-load the media files to a dedicated storage, e.g. cloud, to minimize the storage needed on the server. And there is a plugin to help with that.
Hope you can understand why I won’t be offering this service.
