• I use XV Random Quotes (and its predecessors) since many years. Instead of just displaying random text quotes, I let it show a random selection of four thumbnail images in the sidebar, each of which linking to the blog posting where the picture is used. Works great! Have a look at my blog at

[ link redacted, please do not post links in reviews ]

and scroll down the sidebar: You’ll immediately notice a row of four photos linked to their respective articles. I think that this is a clever way to bring old articles back to the visitor’s attention again.

All I have to do is to use HTML link snippets as “quotes” in XV Random Quotes. Thus, this plugin is far more useful as you might think upon first glance. It’s sheer magic! Thank you, Xavi, for keeping it alive. ??

Thanks a lot for your support!

I finally managed to do a “first” cleanup of the code, to have it working without issues in modern versions of WordPress.

I plan to keep investing further on it, as I’m also using it as a learning experience developing for WordPress.

So if you have any request, any new feature you’d like to see, feel free to contact me and I’ll try to implement it ??

    Hi Xavi,

thank you for your quick reply! The only “complaint” I have is that the German language localization file seems to be a little outdated. Would be nice to see the .pot catalog file to be distributed along with the other plugin files, so that translators volunteering to supply new translations or update existing ones with poedit won’t have to ask for any assistance…

Thanks again for maintaining this little software gem!

    Yours,

    Ralph,

    Here you have: https://github.com/xavivars/xv-random-quotes/issues/3

Feel free to add any other feature request you have there.

    Hello zonebattler,
do you know how to configure the shortcode or the settings to make the quotes load without repeating until all quotes in a category have been shown one time? This is very important to what I am trying to do. Thank you for any help you might give.

    Hello mytasksitepm,

I’m sorry to say that I can’t help you here. I’m just a plain user and I only know the settings of the sidebar widget…

    Hi Xavi,

I have to report a serious malfunction: Adding new quotes doesn’t work anymore on first try: If you save a new quote, it’s content is lost. However, if you edit the new (but empty) quote, saving it again works fine. So it is still possible to add new data, but it would be appreciated if you could fix the issue. Thanks!

Hey zonebattler. I’m trying to reproduce it, but I can’t… I have no problems on creating new quotes, either in a “clean” WordPress running TwentySixteen with no other plugins activated and in my crappy-fully-bloated-of-plugins old-theme blog (https://xavi.ivars.me).

Could you try to give me some more info about the problem, or what quote are you trying to add (to see if I can reproduce it)?

    Hi Xavi,

thanks for adressing the issue! OK, here’s my detailed bug report. As I wrote in my very first post above, hava a look at my blog at

    https://www.zonebattler.net/

and scroll down the sidebar: You’ll notice a column of four randomly chosen photos (thumbnails) which are linked to their respective articles. I think that this is a clever way to bring old articles back to the visitor’s attention again. Here is an example of one of the “quotes” I use:

    <a href="https://www.zonebattler.net/2016/06/28/sommerliches-stockholm/"><img src="https://www.zonebattler.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/2016-06-28_stockholm-2.jpg" width="150" height="200" alt="Impressionen aus Stockholm" title="Impressionen aus Stockholm" /></a>

Adding a quote like this doesn’t work on first try: Actually, the new quote is created upon saving, but it is empty and does not contain a single character anymore. However, I’m able to edit the new quote, paste in the code snipped as shown above once again and save it a second time. Then it works and the new quote is active, usable and working.

This strange behaviour came up with one of the last plugin updates. It worked well “in the old times” without any issues for years!

Thanks for trying to resolve this.

@xavivars and @zonebattler It’s fantastic that you’re working on solving a 12 month old problem but this review is going to be automatically closed soon. The forum does that. Once that’s done there will be no more replies possible and even forum moderators will not be able to re-open this thread.

Can zonebattler please start a support topic on this problem?

No problem! But just to make it clear: the problem was “only” 1 month old ??
