Grab first image on post and resize for thumbnail

I want to display lists on my site for posts in particular categories. I would like these lists to have a thumbnail. I do not want to have to create a thumbnail for each post as I have thousands. I would like for the first image on the post (full size) to be grabbed, resized, and used automatically. Are there any plugins that do this?
