• First, I found their support to be VERY responsive. They answered all my questions quickly, even if I didn’t like the answer. They never left me hanging.

The free version of version 2.x is nice, but missing so many features and it’s difficult to style. There is pretty good documentation on their site if you are a “do-it-yourself” person, but it still isn’t easy. Of course, this is a business venture, so you’d expect that to be the case.

However, while their Pro version does a LOT more and is easier to style, they opted to go with both a paid Pro version AND add-on modules to stick it to you for more money. I’d rather either buy just the features I need or pay one lump sum for all features… not get stuck paying for both.

And even with all of their add-on modules, they still only do what all the other Calendar plugins do. There’s nothing really unique that sets them apart and makes you want to buy theirs over a competitor. At least not without trying them all first.

And if you do end up using their plugin, you’re stuck with it… There’s no ability to export data and when I asked about it, they said they were adding export support “as a paid add-on”.

But, as I mentioned initially, they are there when you have questions/problems and that counts for a LOT.

  • Hey dnavarrojr – Rob from Modern Tribe here. I normally pass through here to check on reviews about once a week, but have been focused on finalizing the Events 3.0 release and haven’t been as active. I did want to thank you – on behalf of the whole team – for taking the time to write up this review. We pride ourselves on the support side of things and to see your review reflect that validates the work of Jonah and the team.

You make some really good points on the pricing model. While those are admittedly not ultimately my decisions to make, I can say with confidence that the thinking was not to try and nickel-and-dime people. The functionality that we’ve got limited to separate, paid add-ons was all a fairly substantial investment to build and support post-launch, and while there is definitely merit to the idea of a full-featured, one-price plugin suite…we’ve found that a lot of our core users just don’t have a need for the entire package. That is, they may want a calendar with WooCommerce based ticket sales, but don’t need recurring events or Facebook importing.

I do want to clarify about the ability to export, though – since I fear you might have been misinformed there (if you can remember where it was, I’d like to see it so I can make sure everyone on my team is on the same page when it comes to messaging). The ability to export is available using the basic WP import/export functionality, and we’ve also got a CSV importer/exporter in the works that will be bundled with Events Calendar PRO (and not something you’d need to pay extra for). While the idea of building an import/export tool for third-party calendar plugins like All In One has been discussed, no work has been done nor decisions been made yet on pricing or whether those will be standalone/bundled with 3.0.

Lastly: I would definitely be interested in hearing your feedback on the 3.0 build, which is on the cusp of release. We’ve modified it substantially so that a few of your concerns here should be addressed: we’ve rebuilt the plugin, improved docs and made it easier to customize yourself. The PRO release also has a bunch of new views + features so users are getting more bang for their buck on that side. If you email me (rob /a/ tri.be) referencing this post I would be happy to float you a copy of both to get your feedback. No pressure though.

Thanks again for the review and your time/support. If you need anything else or have other thoughts, I’d love to hear them.
