• After dumping my previous blog in it’s entirety and installing the newest version fresh, I see the blog on my website. But my previously bookmarked link to log in to my blog now goes to my 404 page. Where do I log in to add content?

And, can I import my content from the previous version?

    Firefox can’t find your link.

You have to put your domain details into that link!

What is the url of your site?

Ok, I’m in. Now, can I import previous WP blog content to the new version?

Is the old blog is up and running? What WP version does the old blog use? You might want to have a look at Moving_WordPress.

No, I had to take the old blog down in order to get the new one running. The old one had all sorts of problems so I ended up doing a total clean sweep.

I do have my content files uploaded, can I just reconnect to them?

when I tried to import I got this message ” Unable to create directory /home/jsphotof/public_html/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/02. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

Again, how do I figure this out? Or if the old blog is down, is this a moot point?

Your blog’s posts, pages, comments etc aren’t stored in folders. They’re stored in the database. Do you have any backups of the old database?

As for the upload error message, change the permissions on the wp-content directory to 766. If you still have problems, try 767 or 777. Once your uploads are working, change the permissions on wp-content back to 755 again and check that everything still works OK.

If WP had worked right I could have saved the database I guess, but since it wouldn’t let me in to change anything, and just had one error after another, No, I don’t have a database backup. I think. I do have the whole folder that was on my server copied onto a dvd as backup, but I have no idea how to get just the database out of there. The content – uploads folder is the only one that had current dates on it for when I made my blog posts. If the database is in that folder, I have no idea what it would be named – there is no database listed in the file names.

I also can’t find any file for wp-content directory. I did look at the permissions info, but it states that if I uploaded WP myself I would probably not need to change the permissions. So much for following directions.

    This is SO NOT EASY!

The database is stored somewhere completely different, so it won’t be in that copy.

Did you re-use the same database name when re-installing WP? If not, then the old database might still be intact on your server and some of the old content could be retrieved.

I used a different database name. How would I retrieve the content from there?

You’d need to use PhpMyadmin. Again see Moving_WordPress

oye vey – too much for this late on a Friday- my brain is already fried!

I tried changing the WP URL and blog URL to the old database, just got to my error page. Tomorrow I will attempt the PhpMyAdmin route. I may be back. Thanks for your patience!
